Our April Plant of The Month: The Hosta is an incredibly useful plant. They thrive in light and shade and produce an abundance of foliage. Perfect for achieving a low covering during the spring and summer, they also flower and can bring an attractive scent to a summer garden.
Hostas are easy to grow and will almost look after themselves. They tolerate pretty much any soil type but do prefer a water retentive, fertile soil. Digging in well-rotted organic matter will help them thrive and they should be watered regularly until established.
If you are planting in pots make sure you add plenty of drainage holes to avoid waterlogged soil as this will kill the plant. Avoid metal pots too as Hosta roots should be kept cool. Remove spent foliage as required and clear up dead foliage when it dies back at the end of the growing season.
We have a fantastic selection of Hostas to buy online including the Hosta Fragrant Bouquet, a fast growing Hosta with lime green wrinkled leaves and creamy white margins. Pale Lavender flowers appear in summer. This Hosta will brighten up any shaded border and even looks great in a patio pot. It’s also part of our 4 for 3 offer.
