What better way to decorate your home for the festive period than with a hand-crafted Christmas Wreath. At Golden Valley Plants we have been handmaking premium-quality fresh Wreaths for over 30 years. Here’s everything you need to know when buying a real Christmas wreath this festive season.

How long will a handmade Christmas Wreath last for?

If hung in a cool spot, away from drying winds, a fresh Christmas Wreath purchased from late November should look good until the New Year. Being a ‘living product’ if the foliage has been cut from its tree too early the Wreath will not last as well, which is why we cut our foliage in batches to ensure it stays fresh.

What style of natural Christmas Wreath should I buy?

This is down to personal choice. If you prefer something a more natural/traditional wreath then our ‘Cinnamon Spice’ 14-inch Wreath, might be just for you. For something more contemporary then our ‘The Purple One’ 12-inch Wreath, is the perfect choice.

How are fresh Christmas Wreaths made?

There are various methods for making fresh wreaths, but most of them involve either using a ready-made Wreath base made from wire or rattan, or using recycled materials to make a sturdy hoop. Once you have the base ready the foliage is clamped/tied onto the ring. At Golden Valley Plants, all our Christmas Wreaths are hand-crafted. We start with a metal base, attach the foliage by hand and then decorate each one individually by hand, making every wreath we supply bespoke. All of the Noble Fir foliage used to make our Wreaths is sourced sustainably from Scotland and Ireland.

Where should I hang my natural Christmas Wreath?

The most traditional place to hang a fresh Christmas Wreath is on the front door, to welcome guests and passersby. We would not advise displaying a real Christmas Wreath indoors as higher temperatures will cause them to lose their foliage.

How do I hang a Christmas Wreath on my door?

There are various options, but we would advise buying an over-the-door hanger to avoid damaging your door with nails or screws.

What size of fresh Christmas Wreath should I buy?

It depends on your door size and how much of a statement you want to make. If you have a small Wreath on a large door, it could look out of place. We recommend measuring your door before making a selection to get the perfect size.

The most popular Wreath sizes are:

8 inch = 22.5cm diameter wreath ring, foliage spreads to 30cm

10 inch = 25cm diameter wreath ring, foliage spreads to 30cm+

12 inch = 30cm diameter wreath ring, foliage spreads to 40cm

14 inch = 37cm diameter wreath ring, foliage spreads to 47cm

How do I look after my Christmas Wreath?

Christmas Wreaths are easy to look after, provided you hang them in a cool spot, sheltered from the wind. An occasional misting with water will help keep them looking fresh.

Can I hang my natural Christmas Wreath Indoors?

Artificial Wreaths are great for indoors, but we would not recommend hanging fresh Christmas Wreaths indoors for any length of time as the warmth will cause them to lose their foliage.

What happens to our leftover foliage at Golden Valley Plants?

We use only the freshest Noble Fir foliage to make our Christmas Wreaths. The foliage offcuts and branches are then chipped and composted before our local farmer collects it all to use as mulch on his Herefordshire fields.
