As Mother’s Day approaches, the delightful dilemma of finding the perfect gift for the woman who raised you or fills a motherly role in your life is upon us. But why do we buy gifts? We think it’s more than just a tradition; it’s a heartfelt expression of gratitude, a way to say ‘thank you’ for the unwavering love and support they’ve shown us throughout the year.
In the lush world of gift-giving, we highly recommend the gift of a plant for those with green thumbs, a love of gardening and a penchant for meaningful gestures. Plants, with their enduring beauty and symbolism, transcend the ordinary, and among them, our rose, ‘Mum in a Million‘ and ‘Mother’s Best‘ peony stands out for us as the perfect choices.
Roses, with their timeless elegance, reflect our enduring love, while peonies symbolise prosperity, honour, and a life well-lived – qualities we associate with the incredible women we celebrate on Mother’s Day.
Of course as a family-run business with over 50 years of experience in growing high-quality perennials and having recently launched our new Perfect Roses Collection we have a variety of plants to choose from that we are sure would be perfect for Mother’s Day gifting.
For many of us celebrating with our Mum is not possible as they are no longer with us and we often hear from customers who are looking to buy a plant in memory of their mum. These plants often become a focal point in their garden reminding them of special memories with their mum, often connected to gardening.
Recently we were delighted to hear one customer’s story and with her permission, we thought we would share her story.
Ann is a wheelchair user and with the help of her husband Don, has built an accessible garden in memory of her Mum Doreen who died of Cancer four years ago. Ann’s mum only got to see the building plot which is now Ann and Don’s home but she promised to create a garden in her memory.
Today the garden which has a river at the bottom of it is full of Doreen’s favourite plants, in fact so many that last autumn Don banned Ann from buying any plants until this spring! It’s a light-hearted ban though as Don has played his part in bringing Ann’s memorial garden to life by doing the planting, of course supervised by Ann, who can now wheel herself along the path towards the river enjoying the many plants and flowers that are flourishing along the way.
The stunning colour of the salvias, tall grasses and echinacea command attention as your eye is drawn into a carefully planned and meticulously executed design. We are sure Doreen would be delighted and very proud of her daughter and we will be sending Ann a special gift to add to the garden this year.
Stories like Ann’s remind us all of just what our garden can mean to us and how it is in our hands to design and create a space that brings us joy but also is a reminder of those we love but have sadly lost. We love this article that helps highlight how gardening can heal, whether it’s through visiting gardens or gardening yourself there is a proven effect on the increase of well-being, the reduction of stress and an increase in happiness. Garden Therapy as it is known can bring healing and peace to your life.
Not everyone looks forward to Mother’s Day
We appreciate and understand this, every year we invite our customers or as we prefer, our gardening to the community, to opt out of emails at this time of year so we don’t offend or upset but we do hope that whatever Mother’s Day means to you, like Ann, you can find a place to find peace and tranquillity.
