Hollyhocks will grow well in most moist, but well-drained soils in full sun or partial shade. They can be planted in a sheltered or exposed position but staking is recommended to help support the plant, especially in more exposed positions. Water at least once a week during summer months, but much less during cooler periods – you can reduce watering once established. It’s worth spraying them with a fungicide twice a week during the growing season to help prevent rust which can become a big issue if not controlled on Hollyhocks. If you spot any signs of rust remove the affected leaves. One benefit of not removing faded flowers is that they will reseed themselves so in good conditions while the original plant might be short-lived, you can continually grow more plants in the following years.
