Miscanthus ‘Strictus’

(Porcupine Grass)

Miscanthus 'Strictus' is a standout ornamental grass cherished on our nursery for its distinctive foliage and dependable garden performance. Recognised with the esteemed RHS Garden Merit, this grass is favoured by our head grower for its striking appearance and versatility with garden placement. 'Strictus' features upright, arching leaves that are green with horizontal bands of yellow. These bands give the grass a distinctive, almost bamboo-like appearance, adding a unique architectural element to garden landscapes. As the season progresses, the foliage transitions to a golden hue. In late Summer to early Autumn, Miscanthus 'Strictus' produces elegant plumes of feathery flowers that emerge in shades of purple and silver, further enhancing its visual appeal. These flowers persist into Winter, providing interest throughout the colder months. Our nursery values Miscanthus 'Strictus' for its low maintenance requirements and its adaptability to various soil types and light conditions. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and is drought tolerant once established, making it suitable for sustainable garden practices. This grass looks stunning as a focal point in mixed borders or mass-planted for a dramatic effect. It also compliments contemporary and naturalistic garden designs, adding texture and height to the landscape while attracting wildlife with its seeds and shelter.

Miscanthus thrives in well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. We advise planting it in a sunny location for optimal growth, although it can tolerate partial shade. Ensure proper spacing between plants to allow for adequate air circulation. When planting, dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball, and backfill with amended soil. Watering deeply after planting will settle the soil around the roots. This ornamental grass is drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal maintenance for a stunning display in your garden.

Miscanthus requires regular watering until established, especially during dry spells. Once established, it is fairly drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering to promote healthy root development. Mulching around the base helps retain soil moisture. Feed annually in early Spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to support robust growth. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to weak, floppy stems. Proper watering and feeding will ensure that this ornamental grass maintains its vibrant foliage and striking plumes throughout the growing season.

Miscanthus requires minimal pruning but would benefit from cutting back the foliage to about 10-15 cm above the ground in late Winter or early Spring before new growth emerges. This helps maintain the plant's appearance and encourages vigorous growth. Deadheading is unnecessary as the plumes provide Winter interest. Miscanthus is generally disease-resistant and pest-free, though occasional issues with rust or leaf spot can occur. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases. Regular maintenance will keep your Miscanthus looking healthy and attractive.
