Description

Aster 'Berggarten' is a fascinating addition in our range, chosen by our head grower for its early flowering and striking bicolour blooms. This fully hardy perennial features vivid lavender-blue petals with a contrasting bright yellow-orange centre, creating an eye-catching display that enlivens your garden. Flowering from late Summer to early Autumn, 'Berggarten' provides an extended period of colour when many other plants are starting to fade. Its blooms are not only visually appealing in the garden but also excellent for cut flowers, adding a touch of interest to indoor arrangements. Our head grower selected Aster 'Berggarten' for its robust garden performance and ease of care. This Aster thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil, making it a versatile choice for various garden placements. Its compact growth habit makes it ideal for borders, mixed perennial beds, and cottage garden styles, where it can be paired with other late-season bloomers like Sedum and Rudbeckia to create a dynamic, long-lasting display. In addition, 'Berggarten' is valued for its ability to attract pollinators, contributing to a healthy garden ecosystem. With its vivid colours, hardiness, and suitability for cut flowers, Aster 'Berggarten' is a must-have for your garden, providing vibrant colour and ecological benefits from Summer until Autumn year after year.

Planting Conditions

Aster 'Berggarten' thrives in well-drained, fertile soil in a sunny or partially shaded spot. Before planting we recommend watering the Aster thoroughly. Dig a hole and place the plant in the soil at the same level as it was in the pot. Ensure good air circulation to prevent mildew. Adding organic matter, such as compost, can improve soil fertility and structure. Spacing plants about 45-60 cm apart will allow for proper growth and airflow, ensuring a healthy and vibrant display.

Watering & Feeding

Aster 'Berggarten' requires regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells. Water deeply once or twice a week, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. During the growing season, apply a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4-6 weeks to promote robust growth and abundant blooms. We advise you avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to weak, leggy plants. Mulching around the base helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Adjust the watering frequency based on rainfall and soil moisture levels to ensure optimal growth.

General Care

Aster 'Berggarten' is low maintenance and should be cut back in Autumn to encourage maintained growth. In the UK, Asters face little pest pressure, though they can occasionally be prone to slugs. Combat slug damage with effective use of bait. Additionally, ensuring good air circulation around the plants will minimise the risk of powdery mildew. Regularly remove any dead or diseased foliage to keep the plants healthy. With these simple care steps, your Asters will thrive, providing vibrant blooms season after season.
