Description

Astilbe 'Rheinland' graces our range for its exceptional ornamental value and versatility in garden design. With its delicate, feathery plumes of soft pink flowers rising above finely divided, deep green foliage, 'Rheinland' adds a striking visual feature to any garden. Selected for its reliable performance, this perennial thrives in partial to full shade, making it perfect for woodland gardens, shady borders, or beside ponds or streams. One of the reasons we've included 'Rheinland' in our range is its adaptability to various growing conditions. It prefers moist, well-drained soil but can tolerate occasional dry spells once established. Its compact growth habit and deer and rabbit resistance make it ideal for edging harsh linear pathways or as a standalone feature when planted in containers. This Astilbe blooms from late Spring to early Summer, providing a reliable source of colour and texture in the garden. Its long-lasting flowers attract pollinators, enhancing the ecological diversity of the garden. Whether used as a focal point or as part of a mixed perennial border, 'Rheinland' promises to delight gardeners with its impactful interest and low-maintenance nature. With its ability to thrive in shade and its exceptional ornamental qualities, it's a valuable addition to any garden space.

Planting Conditions

For successful growth of Astilbe 'Rheinland,' prioritise planting in well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Choose a location with partial shade to protect it from direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day. Ensure the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged, as Astilbes thrive in moist conditions. Dig a hole slightly larger than the plant's root ball and backfill with soil mixed with compost. Water thoroughly after planting to help establish roots. These conditions provide an optimal environment for 'Rheinland' to flourish and produce its beautiful plume-like flowers.

Watering & Feeding

Astilbe 'Rheinland' benefits from consistent moisture, especially during dry spells. Water deeply and regularly to maintain soil moisture levels, particularly in warmer months. Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser during the growing season, typically in early Spring and again in midsummer, following package instructions for dosage. Feeding helps sustain healthy growth and abundant flowering. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. With attentive watering and feeding, 'Rheinland' will thrive and reward you with lush foliage and vibrant blooms throughout the season.

General Care

Astilbe 'Rheinland' requires minimal pruning but benefits from regular deadheading to encourage continuous blooming. Remove spent flower stalks as soon as blooms fade to promote new growth. Cut back old foliage in late Autumn or early Spring to make way for fresh growth. Keep an eye out for any diseased or damaged foliage and promptly remove it to maintain plant health. Overall, with its low maintenance requirements, 'Rheinland' is an easy-care perennial that adds colour and texture to shady garden spots with minimal effort.
