Description

Astilbe 'Spotlight' stands out in our range for its captivating feathery texture lending itself to versatility in any garden design. Chosen by our head grower for its exceptional performance and ornamental value, this perennial adds a touch of colour and vibrancy to any landscape. With its feathery plumes of startling pink flowers and finely divided, deep green foliage, 'Spotlight' creates a romantic ambiance in shady borders, woodland gardens, or beside water features. One of the reasons we've included 'Spotlight' in our range is its adaptability to various growing conditions. It thrives in moist, well-drained soil, making it suitable for rain gardens or areas prone to seasonal flooding. Additionally, its growth habit and deer and rabbit resistance make it ideal for edging pathways or planting in containers. This Astilbe blooms from late Spring to early Summer, providing a reliable source of colour and texture in the garden. Its long-lasting flowers attract pollinators, enhancing the ecological diversity of your garden. Whether used as a focal point or as part of a mixed perennial border, 'Spotlight' promises to enchant gardeners with its visual interest and low-maintenance nature. With its ability to thrive in partial shade and its exceptional ornamental qualities, it's a valuable perennial for any garden space.

Planting Conditions

To establish a thriving display of Astilbe 'Spotlight', select a planting site with partial to full shade and moist, well-drained soil. Prepare the soil by incorporating organic matter such as compost to improve moisture retention and fertility. Plant the rhizomes with the crown just below the soil surface, spacing them about 12-18 inches apart to allow for adequate airflow and room to grow. Mulch around the plants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. These conditions will provide an optimal environment for 'Spotlight' to flourish.

Watering & Feeding

Maintain consistent soil moisture for Astilbe 'Spotlight' by watering regularly, especially during dry spells. Ensure the soil remains evenly moist but not waterlogged, as soggy conditions can lead to root rot. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in Spring to provide essential nutrients for healthy growth and vibrant blooms. We recommend supplementing with liquid fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season to support optimal performance. These watering and feeding practices will help sustain the vigour and flowering of 'Spotlight' throughout the growing season.

General Care

For Astilbe 'Spotlight,' focus on attentive care and periodic pruning to maintain its health and appearance. Deadhead spent flowers promptly to encourage continuous blooming and remove any damaged or discoloured foliage throughout the growing season. Cut back the entire plant to ground level in late Autumn or early Spring to rejuvenate growth and improve the overall appearance. Regularly inspect for signs of pests or diseases, addressing any issues promptly. These simple care and pruning practices will ensure 'Spotlight' remains a vibrant and attractive addition to your garden space.
