Astrantia can be planted in most moist, but well-drained soils. Light, sandy soils won’t retain enough moisture so will lead to the plant drying out. They need some sunlight access, but grow best in partially shaded areas of the garden. Regular watering is the most important part of caring for a newly planted Astrantia. Mulching your plants with organic matter will definitely help in reducing water needs and conserving soil moisture. Remember, the less shade is available, the more water will be lost from the soil during sunny days. Replenish your organic mulch every year in the spring, but be careful not to mulch against the stem of the plant as this can cause it to rot. Remove dead flowers to prolong flowering and cut back after flowering has finished to encourage a second flush of flowers.
