Planting Conditions

Delphiniums thrive in well-drained, fertile soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Choose a planting location with full sun exposure, as they require at least six hours of sunlight daily for optimal growth and blooming. Before planting, incorporate organic matter like compost into the soil to improve its structure and fertility. Plant delphiniums in early Spring or early Autumn, spacing them about 18 to 24 inches apart. Provide support stakes or cages to prevent tall varieties from bending or toppling over in windy conditions. With proper planting conditions, delphiniums will thrive and grace your garden with their striking blooms.

Watering & Feeding

For thriving Delphiniums, maintain consistent soil moisture by watering deeply whenever the top inch of soil feels dry, especially during dry spells. Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases. Feed with a balanced fertiliser during the growing season, applying it around the base of the plants every 4-6 weeks. In Spring, incorporate a slow-release fertiliser into the soil during planting. Mulch around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. With proper watering and feeding, Delphiniums will reward you with vigorous growth and abundant, colourful blooms.

General Care

To care for Delphiniums, secure tall flower spikes to stakes to prevent them from bending or breaking in strong winds. Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming. After the first flush of flowers in late May or early June, perform the "Chelsea Chop" by cutting the plant back by half. This technique promotes a second flush of blooms later in the Summer as plants tend to be nearing the end of their 1st flush around the time of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Additionally, remove any yellowing or damaged foliage throughout the growing season to maintain plant health and aesthetics. With proper care, Delphiniums will thrive and produce beautiful blooms throughout the Summer.
