We love our euphorbias here on the nursery and grow Silver Swan for its striking cream-tipped, blue-green foliage that shimmers a silvery hue in the sunlight. More compact than Miners merlot and Ascot rainbow, this Euphorbia displays beautiful clusters of white and lime green flowers, (sometimes with a red-orange eye), in the spring and is a good perennial to encourage pollinators and provide year-round interest. Perfect planted in threes in borders or as mixed planting in pots with other silver leaved plants such as Senecio, Convolvulus, Brunnera Jack frost, Perovskia or Silvery ferns like Athyrium metallicum. Despatches approx. May.

Description

As you may have guessed, we love our Euphorbias at Golden Valley Plants and always enjoy the sight of Euphorbia 'Silver Swan' on our nursery beds with its slightly more compact shape than the other euphorbias, and its usefulness for adding unique texture and colour to borders. Outstanding variegated blue-green foliage with cream edges that remain all year round and beautiful clusters of white and lime green flowers, sometimes sporting delicate red centres that emerge in the spring. A perfect low-maintenance perennial, hailing from the Mediterranean; once it has been watered-in well and established, Euphorbia 'Silver Swan' is drought tolerant, making it great for a water-wise garden or outdoor containers. Its compact, mounding form adds rich colour and texture to gardens. Pair it with silver-foliage plants like Senecio and lamb’s ears, or with the striking Japanese painted fern (Athyrium metallicum) and ornamental grasses such as Pennisetum and Miscanthus. For a bold contrast, plant it alongside white and cream flowering plants to enhance 'Silver Swan''s stunning silvery tones. This resilient variety thrives in various soil types and flourishes in full to partial sunlight, making it a versatile and adaptable choice for any garden.

Planting Conditions

Plant Euphorbia 'Miner's Merlot' with success by adhering to optimal conditions. This perennial thrives in well-drained soil with a slightly alkaline to neutral pH, and adapts well to the UK's temperature climate. A sunny location, receiving at least six hours of sunlight daily, is ideal for 'Miner's Merlot'. Plant during early Spring for seamless establishment and avoiding any frost. With its compact and tidy growth habit, this Euphorbia variety lends itself beautifully to borders or containers, adding a burst of colourful foliage to your garden. By following these planting guidelines, characterised by the right soil composition and sunlight exposure, you set the stage for a vibrant display of 'Miner's Merlot'.

Watering & Feeding

Drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, Euphorbia's thrive with careful watering and feeding. Ensure a well-established start by watering thoroughly, especially during the initial growth phase. Once established, maintain a moderate watering routine, allowing the soil to partially dry between sessions. A balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early Spring provides ample nutrients without overfeeding. With its resilient nature and minimal care requirements, 'Miner's Merlot' effortlessly contributes vibrant, multi-coloured foliage to your garden.

General Care

Euphorbia 'Miner's Merlot' demands minimal care but benefits from mindful practices. Always wear gloves when handling, as its milky sap is toxic. To maintain its neat form, trim tired flower stems back to the first set of leaves below after flowering, ensuring a continuous and impressive display. This low-maintenance perennial thrives in well-drained soil and a sunny or partially shaded spot, adding a burst of multi-coloured foliage to your garden. With these simple guidelines, 'Miner's Merlot' stands resilient and captivating, offering enduring beauty with minimal fuss.
