Lychnis ‘atrosanguinea’ is an easy-to-grow perennial that is popular with bees and other wildlife. The vivid magenta flowers on this evergreen variety contrast beautifully with the silvery foliage. Although short-lived they will self-seed around the garden in ideal conditions. A superb plant for a sunny border.

Description

Lychnis grow best in moderately fertile, well-drained soils in full sun or partial shade. They will not tolerate particularly wet soils and produce the best leaf colour in dry soils. To improve your soil you can add grit and extra organic matter to help with drainage. Water at least once a week during summer months, but much less during cooler periods. Once established they are drought tolerant. A balanced liquid fertiliser can be applied during spring and early summer to improve performance. Although Lychnis are short-lived perennials they will self-seed giving you new plants every year. If you would like to prevent this remove faded flowers before they set-seed. Cut back the faded flower stems after flowering to admire the attractive foliage.
