Description

A dramatically sumptuous oriental Poppy 'Beauty of Livermere,' sways in the breeze with its fantastically vibrant Pillar box red blooms, with velvety black centres and splashes of black. The smooth and silky tissue paper petals stand atop of tall strong stems that reach impressive heights of up to 100cm, allowing them to sway above other perennials in your beds and borders. This fast-growing beauty quickly rises in early Summer and we feel they are an enticing part of any garden design. Downy, mid-green leaves fill space in low-lying spaces on the base of your borders and offer a huge amount of textual interest when planted alongside grasses. Our growers have selected 'Beauty of Livermere' for the dramatic impact that is enjoyed by a fast-growing perennial, with staggering heights and vivid colour that truly elevates visual design in your garden. This perennial can tolerate harsh conditions and is fully-hardy. Although short-lived (ephermeral) this Poppy can self seed if permitted and will happily transition along your borders if you wish. You can avoid this by cutting back hard but many love this perennial for the fascinating natural process. An award winner of the RHS Plants for Pollinators award, 'Beauty of Livermere' is well recognised as providing forage for a wide variety of pollinating insects. Poppies are a perfect part of wildflower meadows, cottage gardens, country gardens, beds and borders and urban garden designs. All are enhanced by the height and exuberancy of this Poppy -  it's one of our long standing favourites.

Planting Conditions

When planting Poppy 'Beauty of Livermere,' consider key factors for optimal growth. Choose well-drained soil in a sunny location, providing a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight daily. Maintain adequate spacing of 12-18 inches between plants to allow proper air circulation. Optimal planting times are in early Spring or Autumn for successful establishment, avoiding planting in frosts. These factors contribute to the health and vigour of 'Beauty of Livermere,' ensuring a robust display of classic poppy blooms in your garden. Following these planting conditions provides a solid foundation for the perennial's growth and overall performance in your outdoor space.

Watering & Feeding

To maintain Poppy 'Beauty of Livermere,' adopt an 'easy-care' approach to watering and feeding. Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogging, especially during dry spells. This perennial doesn't demand excessive watering, making moderation key. As for feeding, 'Beauty of Livermere' is relatively undemanding. A balanced, slow-release fertiliser applied in early Spring provides sufficient nutrients for healthy growth. However, avoid over-fertilising to prevent excessive lushness. With careful attention to watering and modest feeding, this poppy variety will reward you with its vibrantly dramatic blooms, showcasing its natural beauty without any overwhelming maintenance.

General Care

Caring for Poppy 'Beauty of Livermere' is straightforward. Regular deadheading with the removal of spent blooms, encourages continuous flowering and maintains a tidy appearance. We suggest cutting back hard after flowering to promote a second flush of flowers. Monitor for potential pests and diseases, addressing any signs promptly to preserve the plant's health. Adequate spacing of 12-18 inches promotes good air circulation and reduces the risk of fungal issues. This perennial generally requires minimal care beyond these considerations, allowing you to enjoy its classic poppy blooms with ease.
