Description

Scabiosa 'Pink Mist' is a haven of refuge for wildlife, a beautifully powerful perennial that is a bee-magnet and a landing pad for all pollinating insects! A compact, mound forming semi-evergreen perennial which has a larger than average pincushion blooms. The delicate informal shape of blooms born on lance shaped, grey-green leaves look absolutely fantastic against a worn brick wall or a backdrop of gravel to set off a stunning country garden aesthetic. The vibrant yet elegant mauve-blue lends itself to many a garden design! Our head grower selected the Scabiosa 'Butterfly Blue' for it's versatility and he felt that it makes an impactful 'filler' plant among beds and borders that is easy to maintain. This versatile yet hardy perennial is informal in shape and its compact form lends itself to a country cottage garden or rockery perfectly, as well as suiting urban gardens, prairie gardens, pots, containers or wildflower gardens. This dwarf pincushion flower is ideal for under planting in your borders beneath taller shrubs or roses. Once in its ideal location, it will throw out its butterfly loving blooms all Summer long. It’s blooms also hold seeds for birds, so it really does encourage a wealth of activity in your garden! When the flowers look spent, you can offer it a quick deadhead, and it will show again between June and the first frost in around September. Our Scabiosa is nectar-rich, brings wildlife and requires very low maintenance so it is sure to win your heart in no time!

Planting Conditions

Scabiosa 'Pink Mist' is a hardy perennial that is very easy to care for and requires little maintenance. Best conditions are in full sun in well drained soil, perhaps at the front of your borders. Full – partial exposure is okay. In warmer climates your 'Pink Mist' will remain evergreen but for protection, it may die away during winter in colder climates. Protection against too much wet or cold weather would be ideal.

Watering & Feeding

We advise watering periodically when in containers, or until well established. At this stage your Scabiosa will then thrive on natural rainfall. The best way to fertilise your Scabiosa is by removing any mulch and adding a 1-inch layer of compost. This is best done at the beginning of the spring to give your blooms a boost.

General Care

Scabiosa’s like well-drained soil so if your soil is far too heavy then your 'Pink Mist' would probably fare better in pots, containers or even window boxes, such a versatile perennial that is generally disease and pest free! Scabiosa will reliably flower all Summer if you dead head the spent flowers away, this will encourage the plant to keep producing new puffs of pincushion blooms. You may also cut back the faded flower stems in Autumn or leave the seedbeds for birds.
