We love pairing Verbena 'Bonariensis' with other plants like Echinops or Rudbeckia for a visually striking combination of height and colour. Plus, its fragrant blooms add an extra sensory delight to your garden.
With prestigious awards from the RHS, including the Award of Garden Merit and the Plants for Pollinators award, Verbena 'Bonariensis' is not only beautiful but also ecologically beneficial. It's a must-have for any garden seeking both aesthetic appeal and wildlife support.
Planting Conditions
Verbena 'Bonariensis' thrives in well-drained soil with moderate fertility. Choose a sunny location for optimal growth, as this plant prefers full sunlight. Ensure proper spacing, allowing at least 18 to 24 inches between plants to promote air circulation and prevent overcrowding. We recommend planting in early Spring after the danger of frost has passed. Additionally, incorporating organic matter into the soil before planting can enhance soil structure and fertility, providing a favourable environment for Verbena 'Bonariensis' to flourish and produce its characteristic clusters of purple flowers atop tall, slender stems.
Watering & Feeding
Verbena 'Bonariensis' benefits from regular watering, especially during periods of drought or prolonged dry spells. Ensure the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage, which can promote disease. While this plant is relatively low-maintenance, occasional feeding with a balanced fertiliser during the growing season can encourage healthy growth and flowering. Apply fertiliser according to package instructions, typically every 4-6 weeks during the growing season, to provide essential nutrients for sustained vigour and prolific blooming.
General Care
Verbena 'Bonariensis' requires minimal care but benefits from occasional deadheading to promote continuous blooming and maintain a tidy appearance. We advise pruning back any leggy or overgrown stems to encourage bushier growth. This plant is generally resistant to pests and diseases, but occasional inspections for aphids or powdery mildew are advisable, especially in humid conditions. Remove any affected leaves or stems promptly to prevent spread. Overall, Verbena 'Bonariensis' is a resilient and low-maintenance plant that thrives with minimal intervention in a variety of garden settings.
