Description

Fuchsia 'Hardy Delta Sarah' is a remarkable shrub well recognised for its vivid display of bell-shaped flowers, blooming from June through October. Standing at an ideal height of 100cm, it fits seamlessly into mixed perennial borders, cottage gardens, and contemporary urban landscapes. Our head grower is particularly fond of its unusual mixed colourway, which blends striking shades of purple and white which sits against its lush, dark green foliage. The pendulous flowers of Fuchsia 'Hardy Delta Sarah' hang elegantly from arching stems, creating a graceful cascade that illuminate shaded and partially sunny spots in your garden. It wonderfully compliments other perennials and shrubs, adding layers of texture and colour to a wide range of garden designs. It is a shrub often chosen to sit on our flower displays at annual garden shows to enhance the display. Awarded the RHS Plants for Pollinators accolade, Fuchsia 'Hardy Delta Sarah' not only enhances your garden aesthetics but also supports local wildlife by attracting bees and pollinators in decline. Its extended flowering season ensures a continuous supply of nectar from Summer into the early Autumn months. We recommend pairing Fuchsia with Ferns, Hostas, and Heucheras to create engaging contrasts and harmonious garden compositions that thrive in both shade and partial sunny spots in the garden.

Planting Conditions

To ensure your Fuchsia thrives, plant it in a spot with partial shade, avoiding direct afternoon sun which can be too intense. Choose well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter like compost. Fuchsias prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. We advise planting them in Spring after the last frost, spacing them about 30 cm apart to allow good air circulation. Water thoroughly after planting to remove any air pockets in soil around the base. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. These conditions will promote healthy growth and abundant flowering.

Watering & Feeding

Fuchsias need consistent moisture, so we recommend watering them regularly, especially during dry periods. During the first year, ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged by watering regularly. Once established, you can decrease watering to every other week. Feeding every 2-4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser will encourage blooms and healthy growth. Reduce feeding in the Autumn months as the plant enters dormancy. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, as Fuchsias are sensitive to drought conditions.

General Care

For Fuchsias, prune in early to mid-Spring by cutting back the previous year's flowering stems. Remove any thin or weak growth to encourage fresh, strong growth. Deadhead spent blooms regularly to promote continuous flowering. Fuchsias are generally disease-resistant, but they can be susceptible to pests like aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies. Regularly inspect the plants and use insecticidal soap if needed. Ensuring proper air circulation and avoiding overwatering can help prevent fungal diseases. Regular maintenance will keep your Fuchsias healthy and thriving year after year.
