Description

English Lavender is the crown jewel of our nursery, adored by our horticultural team for its exceptional breeding and irresistible fragrance. This compact evergreen shrub, known for its aromatic blooms, is a favourite among gardeners for its ease of care and reliability. Blooming from June to September, it adds a burst of colour and fragrance to any garden design. Adored by wildlife, English Lavender has earned the prestigious RHS Plants for Pollinators award, making it an essential addition to any garden seeking to support declining pollinator populations. Its resilience and hardiness have also earned it the RHS Garden Merit, further solidifying its status as a fabulously reliable garden performer. Perfect for a wide range of garden designs, English Lavender thrives in traditional Cottage Gardens, Urban Gardens, and even Contemporary Gardens. Its versatility extends beyond the garden, as its dried flowers make stunning arrangements, adding a touch of rustic elegance and fragrance to any space. With its drought-tolerant nature, English Lavender is an excellent choice for ecological garden spaces, where it requires minimal water and maintenance. Whether planted en masse or as a fragrant border, this beloved shrub will thrive year upon year.

Planting Conditions

English Lavender thrives in well-drained soil and full sunlight. We advise preparing the planting area by mixing in organic matter to improve drainage, especially in clay soils. Dig holes slightly larger than the root ball, spacing plants 18-24 inches apart. Gently remove plants from containers and loosen roots before planting. Place them at the same depth as they were in their pots and backfill with soil. Water thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots. This ensures optimal conditions for robust growth and prolific blooming.

Watering & Feeding

We advise watering English Lavender sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot. Deep watering once a week during dry spells is sufficient. Avoid wetting the foliage to prevent fungal diseases. Fertilise sparingly with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early Spring to support healthy growth and flowering. Over-fertilisation can lead to excessive foliage at the expense of flowers. Mulch around plants with gravel or crushed stone to conserve moisture and suppress weeds while preventing waterlogged soil conditions.

General Care

For English Lavender, minimal care is needed once established. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushiness. Avoid cutting into old wood as it may not regrow. Remove spent flower spikes promptly to stimulate further blooms and prevent seed formation. In Spring, trim back one-third of the plant's growth to promote vigorous new growth. Regularly inspect for signs of pests such as aphids or fungal diseases like powdery mildew, addressing them promptly to maintain plant health and vitality.
