We love how undemanding Skimmia are, and ‘Perosa’ is no exception! This stunning colour contrast always catches our eye on the nursery – grey-green, variegated leaves with cream edges, cushioning clusters of pink-red buds that appear in August and keep colour until they open up into fragrant creamy-white blooms of star-shaped flowers from March onwards. A real beauty in the winter garden and a favourite with the bees in springtime; ‘Perosa’ keeps its neat shape really well, making it ideal for small gardens, courtyards, and balconies.

Description

Skimmia japonica 'Perosa' is a stunning evergreen shrub, hardy in our UK gardens and prized for its stinking variegated grey-green and cream foliage. The 'Perosa' cultivar produces clusters of deep pink flower buds from august throughout winter bloom and open up into ivory flowers in the early spring, releasing a sweet fragrance that attracts pollinators. Shorter in stature than the 'Rubella' and 'Finchy', Skimmia japonica 'Perosa' grows slowly and reaches an eventual height of around 50cm -100cm with a similar spread. This makes 'Perosa' a perfect little shrub for borders, mixed plantings, or as a feature plant in pots. It thrives in partial to full shade and this low-maintenance ornamental prefers well-drained, acidic to neutral soil and will easily work of urban conditions, making it suitable for city gardens. It requires minimal pruning and is resistant to most pests and diseases. For optimal growth, water regularly, especially during dry spells, and consider a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. With its unique floral display and evergreen foliage, Skimmia japonica 'Perosa' adds beauty and elegance to any garden setting throughout the year. Ideal for both novice and experienced gardeners, this charming plant is a must-have for your landscape.

Planting Conditions

As long as it's not planted in blazing sun, Skimmia japonica 'Perosa' will ask for little more than a partially shaded or shaded spot, with moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil. Hardy in the UK, to temperatures down to -15°C 'Perosa' flourishes best away from harsh direct sunlight. Allow sufficient spacing for air circulation to showcase its compact and beautiful growth.

Watering & Feeding

Skimmia japonica 'Perosa' prefers consistently moist soil but be careful to avoid waterlogging. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, ensuring the soil remains damp without becoming soggy. For feeding, apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring, tailored for acid-loving plants - this will promote healthy growth and abundant flowering. Avoid over-fertilising, since too much can harm the plant.

General Care

Mulch to suppress weeds and help retain moisture. Little to no pruning required, as Skimmia are fairly slow-growing and will keep their neat dome shape nicely but can be lightly pruned in spring after flowering if needed.
